Facility Rental Revenue Workgroup

The Facility Rental Revenue Workgroup is charged with evaluating current facility usage and identifying strategic opportunities to expand and optimize the rental of university-owned spaces. The workgroup will explore innovative, mission-aligned approaches to monetize underutilized assets, enhance community engagement, and generate sustainable revenue streams while ensuring compliance with university policies and state regulations.
Tasks of the Workgroup
- Inventory and Assessment
- Catalog all rentable university facilities, including student centers, athletic venues, academic buildings, and specialty spaces.
- Assess current utilization rates, rental policies, rental prices and barriers to external access.
- Policy Review and Recommendations
- Review existing rental policies, including restrictions related to the Umstead Act and UBIT implications.
- Recommend policy updates to facilitate external rentals while maintaining compliance and mission alignment.
- Revenue Opportunity Identification
- Evaluate opportunities to lease underutilized real estate for startups, incubators, tournaments, concerts, and training programs.
- Explore partnerships with academic programs (e.g., Hospitality Leadership) to integrate student learning into rental operations.
- Identify potential for hosting external events such as weddings, camps, and conferences.
- off-peak periods for events such as tournaments, concerts, and community showcases.
- Marketing and Outreach
- Propose strategies to advertise and promote facility rentals to external audiences, including local businesses, community groups, and event organizers.
- Identify branding and visibility enhancements for lesser-known spaces (e.g., University Communications studio).
