Deploy Faculty Effectively Through Thoughtful Workload Planning

Priority for Current Fiscal Health Review: Medium (Impact is significant; however, this work is in progress, thus it is listed as medium priority for the OC/Implementation Groups)
Revenue: $$
Time to Achieve: In progress. Time to achieve planning that responds to current and near future strategic needs: 1-3 years.

Faculty workload planning allow units to maximize productivity of all faculty and provide for quantifiable and meaningful outcomes to the department, college, and university. Workload planning should recognize and account for differential allocation of time into the teaching/research/service/clinical categories at the level of the faculty member and faculty expertise and where a faculty member is in their career. Workload planning should also provide a clear process by which a faculty member can request to adjust their assignment and for evaluating the return on reassigned time as appropriate to the task and the department (research/creative activity output, internal and external research funding, service output, etc.). Units should carefully examine the impact of internally-funded reassigned time at the department level over time. Workload Guidelines identify deviations in faculty workload to ensure balance in reassignment, fiscal sustainability, and alignment with University, college, and/or department mission.
